Fushi

Description

another one of Imperius-Rex's characters. Fushi is based on someone we used to RP with. Actually, she was probably one of my closest friends at the time.

Fushi comes from the Ryukyu islands, which are the islands south of mainland Japan. The Ryukyuans essentially had their own culture that was distinct from the Japanese. The women often tattooed their hands as a sign of status. I didn't draw them on Fushi here because they wouldn't have shown up very well. Aside from tattooing, they also occasionally wore extremely bright, loose robes over their kimono. They were usually worn all bunched up around the waist, and then tied off with a sash. These robes were often dyed using a technique called bingata which is unique to the Ryukyus. Nowadays, these robes are usually reserved for special occasions. Fushi belongs to the Christian minority of Japan. Since this is an alternate timeline, Christianity develops under different circumstances and in the context of Japanese history, Christians aren't nearly as persecuted because the shogunate isn't as hostile towards foreign influences. Which in this case, was established by Oda Nobunaga and is carried on by his descendants.

Fushi is supported by her family who specializes in dying fabrics, which has become a popular commodity in the alternate timeline. That just about sums up her character somewhat.

ANYWAY. So I was actually working on something else while I drew this. So I ended up half-assing the sketch by a lot. But even then, I think it turned out pretty well.

Anyway I have other things I'm working on, including a book character and possibly another sketchdump?? Hope you're looking forward to it.

Besides the fact that it sounds like tattooing your hands would hurt, it kind of makes human Ammy having divine markings on her skin a lot more reasonable...I must consider this further.
